Former Sandown Mayor Cathy Wright recently joined current Mayor Gary Young, town and parish councillors and representatives of local community groups to launch the new Bay-wide defibrillator map, identifying locations of life-saving devices in the Bay.
The map, produced by Mark Watson, is the result of months of research and will be maintained as further locations are added in the future – and reinforces the message of contacting emergency services in the first instance.
An event was held at Sandown’s Broadway Centre to mark the launch of the map.
Cathy Wright said:
“It is really heartening to see the Bay Councils work together to produce a community resource, to be located in local libraries and other locations, and will be available from Sandown, Lake and Shanklin Councils.
“In the past I have fundraised for a defibrillator outside Sandown Library, and a couple of winters ago came across someone on the revetment in need of emergency care and I didn’t know the location of the nearest defibrillator, so wanted to do something about it: I am also grateful to the Co-op in Sandown for providing funding towards a defibrillator to be installed at the revetment in Lake”.
Sandown Mayor Gary Young adds:
“The project has brought the Councils together and we thank Cathy for pulling this together; and, hopefully, there will be similar joint initiatives in the future – all of the Bay residents will benefit from the map alongside the ongoing campaign to provide more accessible defibrillators”.
