2 teenagers accused of arson are set to appear in court this week after 3 barns were destroyed by fire in Upton near Ryde last year.
Emergency services were called to Gatehouse Road on 1st August 2019 when a large fire broke out on a farm, as first reported by Island Echo. The blaze had already taken hold by the time fire crews arrived on the scene, resulting in the barns and 800 hay bales being lost.
18-year-old Alex Thomas Rafferty, of Poole Lane, Bournemouth, is alleged to have committed arson in that, without lawful excuse, he destroyed 3 barns containing stock to the value of around £156,000.
A 16-year-old local lad, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is also accused of arson.
The pair were arrested shortly after the incident but released pending further enquiries. Charges have now been brought against the duo, who will appear before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Friday (3rd January).
UPDATE FRIDAY – The 2 teenagers appeared before Magistrates this morning. The case has been adjourned to the Isle of Wight Crown Court on 27th January 2020.
Both males have been released on unconditional bail.

Another case of two misguided individuals not considering the consequences of their irresponsible behaviour.
The cost of their moronic behaviour is over £150,000 pounds. The problems created for the barns owners must have been immense and I guess the two people charged have no assets to reimburse the owners.
As ever the rest of us pick up the bill via ever increasing insurance premiums .
If they are found guilty then they need a robust sentence.
a robust sentence would be working on the farm at no cost to the farmer until the debt they owe, is paid off
They owe about eighty grand a piece. They should be working on that farm for nothing, until the farmer has recouped the costs, off their backs.
Riduculous at 16 you can produce a child, get a full time job and pay your taxes and live independently. However, if you break the law and commit a crime you are protected.
Make the parents pay. Unfortunately though they are probably on the same level as the teenage scum.
End the tax credits of children. Too many thick women who don’t ‘really’ want a child, so they don’t worry about getting pregnant knowing that the state will keep them then as well off or better than many FULL time working people who have to fund all their rent and all their council tax.
The vile offspring feels elevated in society as to them, the mug next door working is the idiot, as they see their parents doing just a few hours, and having everything and more than the full time workers, then they feel no shame so grow up even more vile, causing trouble, and with nothing to lose, they too end up being a ‘parent’ in the loosest terms of the word, as soon as puberty hits, bringing more low life into the increasing cess pool of social housing, tax credit kept families.
Sorry for those decent families but too many now of the wrong sort are having the largest amount of mini clones, and each generation is getting much much worse.
Cut their parents benefits to the bone, give them the worst accommodation so that they have something to aspire too, not just have a one night stand and gain what most work hard for.
The country has ‘tried’ the soft approach and it clearly doesn’t work
lock these people up all their lives im literally so sick and tired of these yobbo kikes ruining the island
More sick of idiots calling them ‘misguided’ They KNOW exactly what they are doing. They usually film it and upload their vile actions.
Easy to pretend to be sorry when caught, and pretend you ‘didn’t realise’ so they then ‘laugh’ at the adults stupidity in believing them as well as get away with it all.
With you there Aziz. If you dont know right from wrong at 16 &18, then said ‘children’ are obviously dysfunctional and don’t deserve a place in society until their capabilities are addressed.
I can tell you from personal experience of helping to bale hay in my younger years that it is seriously hard work. Suggestion would be to get these 2 young, strong and bored lads to burn off some of their energy and get them to stack the 800 bales of hay that they destroyed probably out of boredom……. They would certainly sleep well and not have the energy to get up to no good after a few days of hard work, for sure.
