2 teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of arson following a barn fire on the outskirts of Ryde this afternoon (Thursday).
As first reported by Island Echo, the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were called to reports of a barn well alight on Gatehouse Road at Upton at just gone 15:00.
4 fire appliances, 2 water carriers, the Incident Support Unit and the Incident Command Unit continue to tackle the blaze, which involves 800 hay bales across 3 barns. 2 fire appliances from the mainland have been drafted in to provide additional fire cover on the Isle of Wight.
It has been confirmed to Island Echo that an 18-year-old man from Ryde and a 16-year-old boy have been arrested on suspicion of arson.
They remain in custody at this time.
Fire crews are expected to remain on scene for several hours.
UPDATE FRIDAY – The 2 teenagers have both been released from custody, although they remain under investigation at this time.

The 16 year old is not a boy, you can apply to join the army at 15y 7 month and join at 16 that makes you a man. Perhaps compulsory 10 years marching for these 2 cheese heads.
I’m not condoning this anti social behaviour… But isn’t it a bit niave to simplify it to ‘they should be looking for jobs’ or ‘at 16 you’re a man’.
Theres vast lack of opportunity on the island, there’s no youth centres open, we lack a university and most job available are seasonal.
Alot of young people don’t get the opportunities from home, may have alot to deal with at that age, a shift of expectation and the sudden need to act like an adult. Does no one look at the community and see there’s hardly anything to do at that age, I think it’s no wonder there seems to be an increase in anti social behaviour in young adults.
Bring back the youth centres!
It is no different now, than when I was young, my mum and dad were young and my grand parents, only difference now is that we all had respect for other people’s property and for others, something that is very much lacking now. Bring back borstal run by the monks, I know a few who were in there as boys, never did nothing wrong as men!
There was just as much anti social behaviour in the past – you just didn’t know about it, as social media in the form it is didn’t exist, so reporting of it was less and details were only known by a much smaller number of people.
stop making excuses for the runts and have them graft their arses off replacing every bit of winter feed they burnt and have them out there morning, noon and night clearing up the mess they created.
youth centres had their own problems and bringing them back won’t make a shred of difference – those who are malevolent will continue to be, wherever they are.
