A 17-year-old boy is being quizzed by detectives after an 8-year-old girl was left with horrific facial injuries – so bad that she is now undergoing surgery.
Police were contacted at 16:50 yesterday (Thursday) with a report that an 8-year-old girl from Newport had sustained a serious facial injury at 16:15 on Vectis Road, East Cowes.
As part of their investigation a 17-year-old boy from Ryde has been arrested on suspicion of GBH. He remains in custody at this time.
It is alleged by the girls devastated family that a skateboard caused her injuries. They described her injuries, which have seen her nose badly disfigured, as ‘life-changing’
Island Echo understands that the girl has undergone emergency surgery today (Friday).
A Police spokesperson has said:
“We are aware that there is online discussion about this incident and would ask people to not speculate while we establish the full circumstances and progress our investigation.
“We would ask anyone who has information that may be relevant, including anyone who believes they witnessed this incident, to contact us by calling 101 and quoting 44260108322.”

UPDATE SATURDAY – The 17-year-old suspect has been bailed until 6th June, as investigations continue.

People can defend all they like, no excuse. Should know better at 17, even if it was an accident he should’ve stayed with her for the paramedics and eventual questioning. Made the situation worse by running.
Although, it’s about as much as we’ve come to expect from today’s teenagers. No respect for anyone or anything, and a lack of any moral compass.

Maybe don’t speculate on situations u know nothing about. He didnt leave the girl he stayed with her and ran to her aid when there was no adult about to run to her aid. This was a horrific accident. The only time he ran of was to call his parents while hes got a load of adults threatening to “smash his face in”. This situation was absolutely horrific for everyone involved. I pray the poor girl’s injuries dont hinder her future as much as i hope all these comments and threats made towards an innocent boy who was simply playing on his scateboard doesn’t hinder his too. Please be mindful of things you say. Theres always a bigger picture.
