UPDATED: A taxi driver is understood to have been robbed in broad daylight and at ‘knife point’ in Cowes this afternoon (Wednesday).
5 Police units responded to the scene on Mill Hill Road Windmill Close near Love Lane at just after midday following what is understood to be alarming reports that an armed robbery had just occurred.
Island Echo has been told that the male suspect had been picked up as a fare in Ryde, but when the taxi reached its destination the robbery began.
Scenes of crime officers spent this afternoon gathering evidence from the vehicle.
No one is thought to have been injured in the incident and the taxi driver has been assisting Police with their investigations.
UPDATE THURSDAY – Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that £100 in cash and a number of mobile phones were taken in the armed robbery yesterday.
A spokesperson for the force has said:
“A man believed to be in his twenties was reported to have threatened the driver of a silver Dacia with a knife after he had been dropped off.
“Enquiries are ongoing, including reviewing CCTV and no arrests have been made at this time”.
The suspect is described as:
- White
- Believed to be aged in his twenties
- Slim
- 5ft 8ins tall
- Pale complexion with blonde hair and stubble
- He was wearing a grey top with a zip and grey shorts
- He had a distinctive large reddish and beige plaster on his right thigh
The 54 year-old male taxi driver was not hurt in the incident.
