League leaders Ryde C met their main rivals Ryde Rankers who are in 2nd place in the table.
The tight match which would have been expected did not materialise, and the C team won by 9 games to 1.
Despite the score line, there were some thrilling 5 set games and top quality play, with the Rankers Hugh idle particularly unlucky to lose two 5 set games to Paul Rainford and Joe Chapman. Lewis Johnstone won the only game for the Rankers, and the gap between the top 2 teams has widened considerably.
Ryde A met Ryde Goshawks in a close match, with the A team’s Scott Lawson unbeaten and player of the match, although the Goshawk’s Scott Mills took him to 5 sets. Mills, the current IW Men’s Singles Champion, had to fight hard to get the better of the A team’s Mark Turner in another 5 set thriller. The match ended 6-4 to the A team, who are in 3rd place in the table.
There was a Newport Vics derby match between the A and B teams, and this was keenly contested and a very close affair.
The A team’s Anna Joyce won 2, including against her father Barry Joyce, who plays for the B team. With the score 5-4 to the B team going into the doubles, the A team won the game comfortably in 3 sets, and the match ended in a draw.

In Division 2…

In Division 2, Ryde Revellers increased their lead at the top of the table after an emphatic 8-2 win over second placed Ryde Detonators.
This was a long match with many 5 set games, with the Detonators Guy Golbourn particularly unlucky against the Revellers’ Gourav Shah and Spike Hughes, whilst teammate Bernie Forward also suffered the same fate against Shah and team mate David Batten.
Havenstreet B, who are in 3rd place and contenders for the Division 2 title, were held to a draw by Ryde Quintet. This match went on late into the night, and the Quintet’s William Paul found all his games going to 5 sets. Paul made it over the line in 2 of them, whilst the other was a loss to Havenstreet’s Carl Rye, player of the match. The doubles was the closest of contests, with Paul and team mate Alan Dennis winning 16-14 in the final set over Rye and Paul White.
Newport Vics D celebrated their 1st win of the season against Ryde Rockets, with Chris Gordine and Debbie Yates unbeaten. The match ended 7-3 to Vics, although they still lie bottom of the table.
