John Cornforth – Newport Vics A – Div One

Ryde A took an emphatic victory against Ryde Raiders in Division 1 of the Isle of Wight Table Tennis League last week.

Scott Lawson and Alex Rorke won all their matches and teammate Glenn Morley took 2, whilst the Raiders’ Timothy Giles was their only player to get on the scoresheet. Ryde A have now taken back the lead from Shanklin Sharks by a massive 8 points.

Meanwhile, Ryde Royals met Newport’s top team, Vics A, and this proved an exciting, close match. In the game of the night, Newport’s John Cornforth met Ryde’s Ricky Lock in a 5-set thriller full of long, tense rallies and it went right to the wire with Cornforth taking the match in the final set 11-8.

The Royal’s Hugh Idle was mainly untroubled as he cruised through to take all his games, and, with the match score at 5-4 to Vics, joined teammate Lock in the doubles which they claimed in 4 sets against Vics Dave Hilliam and Paul Freeborn, to end the match in a draw.

Havenstreet Hooters met the siblings of Newport Vics B in a thrilling match, with Newport’s Michael Joyce taking his first win of the season, against Karen King. Kevin Gattrell of Havenstreet was player of the match and made an incredible comeback when he came from 10-4 down in the fifth set against Anna Joyce to win the set 12-10. Sean and Anna Joyce won the doubles and the score ended 6-4 to Vics.

Division 2

The newly-promoted teenagers of Ryde Rookies claimed a great win over the experienced, but under strength, Rookley A, with Joseph Chapman taking all 3, Ross Holme 2 and Oliver Yelland 1, plus a doubles victory by Chapman and Holme to end the match 7-3 to the Rookies.

Freshwater A climbed to third place in the table after an emphatic 7-3 victory against Shanklin B, with Freshwater’s Rob Warren player of the match with 3 wins.

Division 3

Division 3 leaders Ryde Revellers suffered their first defeat of the season against second-placed Ryde Rackets. The match of the night was between the Revellers’ Nicky Dando and the Rackets’ experienced Heather Wykes, with Wykes edging the final set, and the score finished 7-3 to the Rackets leaving them only 3 points behind the Revellers at the top of the table.

The experienced Ryde Rustics had a thrilling match against Ryde Rebels, with the Rustics Pauline Rorke and Bert Paice winning 2 games each, and Frank Kelly taking 1.  13-year-old twins Ethan and Joe Millward fought hard, with Joe gaining a win against Kelly. With the Rebels 5-4 down going into the doubles, Joe partnered his grandad Martin Dove to take the doubles in 5 sets and claim the draw.
