A Royal Navy Bomb Disposal team have carried out a controlled explosion on a piece of ordnance in Totland this morning (Saturday).
Hampshire Constabulary were alerted to the discovery of a possible unexploded object at Totland Pier at 18:50 last night. A member of the public raised the alarm.
The area was secured by Police overnight ahead of the arrival of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from Portsmouth earlier this morning.
Residents in the area reported hearing an explosion at just before 09:10.
Today’s incident is the latest in a recent flurry of bomb disposal activity on the Island, including the discovery of a bomb dating back to 1850 in Totland earlier this week.
