ORDNANCE DATING BACK TO 1850 FOUND AT TOTLAND BEACH

Royal Navy Bomb Disposal experts are working alongside HM Coastguard at a beach in the West Wight tonight (Tuesday). 

It is at Totland Beach that a possible piece of ordnance has been discovered.

Freshwater Independent Lifeboat and The Needles Coastguard Rescue Team are both on scene.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team rushed to the incident at around 18:45. The experts were already on the Island dealing with a grenade in Ryde, as previously reported by Island Echo.

UPDATE @ 21:55 – A controlled explosion has been carried out by the Bomb Disposal team following the erection of a 200m cordon.

The incident has been brought to a close.

UPDATE @ 22:45 – It has been confirmed that the object was found by a member of the public at around 18:00.

The ordnance was dated as being from the mid 1800s.
