Nick Matthews with Order of Merit Scratch and Nett Trophies

The final event of the summer for the Isle of Wight Junior Golf Development Tour was held at Osborne Golf Club on Sunday (4th November).

As the final event it was all to play for with a number of prizes up for grabs including the scratch and nett on the day, the scratch and nett Order of Merit and the Team League Trophy.

In the competition of the day Nick Matthews, who is a Wightlink-sponsored Talented Athlete, playing off 3 took both the handicap (35 points) and scratch (32 points), from Aidan Young off 36 (35 points) in the handicap and Harrison Knights in the scratch (26 points).

The Order of Merit competitions (Scratch and Handicap)  are played for over the season where players are awarded points based upon their position in the competitions played. This year there had been 5 events at Newport, Shanklin and Sandown, Cowes, Osborne and Westridge. The events at Freshwater and Ryde were cancelled due to poor weather.

In the Handicap Order of Merit there were 4 players in contention – Matthews, Knights, Joel Tarry and Aidan Young. Aidan put in a great performance to shoot 35 points and take 3rd place with a season total of 22 points. Knights just held onto second position with 22.5 points and by virtue of his win on the day Matthews took it with 26 points.

In the scratch Order or Merit there were 3 players in contention – Matthews, Knights and Tarry, the 3 of them out first in the same group. It was Knights who was leading at the turn, 1 shot ahead of Matthews. On the back 9 Matthews turned it on carding 4 birdies to take not only the win on the day, but more importantly the overall title with a seasons total of 35 Order of Merit points having won 3 of the 5 events. 2nd was Knights with 30.5 points and 3rd Tarry with 23.

In the team event, Westridge had an unassailable lead finishing with a season total of 66, with Newport and Shanklin & Sandown sharing second place, both with 27 points. Westridge Junior Captain Will Lakin accepted the trophy on behalf of his team.

Over the winter there will be a series of junior events, the first on will be at Cowes on the 18th November.
