The 2021-22 hockey season is underway and it’s been a busy start for the Isle of Wight Hockey Club, winning 2 out of 3 opening matches.
Salisbury vs Isle of Wight Men’s 1s (1-3)
The men’s 1s were away to face Salisbury, They started off well, with intricate passing around the defence and strong linkup in the centre, which was the deciding factor in the island converting from close range. Continuous attacking presence saw the island side head into the break 2-1 up. Second half was intense and saw Salisbury come back into the game and slot a deflection on the break. Clinical execution of a penalty stroke cemented the win for the IOW. (Goals A. Payne 3).
Isle of Wight Ladies 1s vs Eastleigh (7-0)
The ladies 1s kicked off their season with a 7-0 win against Eastleigh. New formations and training paid off early for the IOW into the 1st half, with a short corner awarded. Fast injection to the top of the D, a slip left and shot on goal saw the island side 1-0 up – classic hockey! Great communication and build up play saw more chances and goal conversions for the island side. (Goals S. Hart 3, K. Ednay 3, G. Whittle 1).
Basingstoke 5s vs Isle of Wight Ladies 2s (0-0)
Sporting a new side, the ladies 2s match against Basingstoke saw a couple of goal opportunities for the IOW from short corners early into the game, after great linking play – sadly the island side could not convert. Basingstoke stepped up the pressure in the 2nd half but were unable to break down the island’s defensive line. The tide turned again with more goal scoring chances but in the end, a fair 0-0 result from an evenly matched game.
