UPDATED: Firefighters are tonight (Tuesday) tackling a stable fire on the outskirts of Ventnor.
Two appliances from Shanklin and Ventnor and a water carrier from Ventnor are currently attending the incident on Newport Road near Wroxall.
A stable block is said to be well alight. Multiple 999 calls were received at around 22:30.
UPDATE @ 23:30 – Firefighters are continuing to tackle the fire, which has damaged a stable block and has spread to nearby vehicles and a caravan. It is believed a muck heap fire is to blame, spreading to the stables.
Four main jets and four hose reels are being used to dowse the flames.
The main road between Wroxall and Ventnor has been closed resulting in diversions for Route 3 buses and motorists.
No one has been injured in the incident, however one pony has been rescued and moved to a nearby field.
UPDATE @ 00:10 – Firefighters have successfully brought the blaze under control and have extinguished the fire, however remain on scene damping down.
Newport Road remains closed and will remain closed into the early hours.
UPDATE WEDNESDAY: Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances behind last night’s fire.
The cause of the blaze, which has severely damaged a stable block and put a pony’s live in danger, is currently unknown and an investigation has been launched by Hampshire Constabulary.
One witness has told Island Echo how she saw someone near to the stables at around the time of the fire.
