Greene King has announced the potential closure of the iconic Isle of Wight pub, Hare and Hounds, Island Echo can reveal.
National pub chain Greene King has confirmed this afternoon (Monday) that a consultation is underway whilst the potential for closure is considered.
Island Echo understands that the pub’s staff were informed of the consultation last week, with the 30-day review period beginning this week.
A spokesperson for Greene King has said:
“Making the decision to close a pub is never an easy one and our main focus is on supporting our team members at this time.”
The establishment remains open and trading as usual.
A final decision is yet to be made.

Why? Thought it was a good business, always busy. Poor staff if it does close down, then what will become of it, more land for Robin Hill maybe?
Rising costs,rising energy,rising wages,higher taxes,less money in customers pockets.
Can’t pay the bills then folk dont go out to eat and drink.
Spot on.
Such a shame, looks like another one is going to
bite the dust.
The ongoing Traffic lights saga probably didn’t help
the business.
Never used to be lights there, never was a problem until they made one………….
Lights are a pain in the a@se, majority of motors
bunk them.
Has it been run into the ground on purpose? It’s not bn good for years. Very haphazard. Shame, as the potential is there. My son and I had a lovely meal there abt 5 yrs ago, so returned and it was awful. Took family there a few yrs ago and waited 40 minutes for our food, making them nearly miss a ferry! Also, like so many places now, there’s never enough staff!
Just needs new managment. The menu isn’t like a normal Greene king and too ala carte. Thus attracts only people stuck in traffic at lights, people leaving Robin Hill and old people.
How old do you have to be to be classed as old?
Use it or lose it folks, in ten years time, I bet the last ones standing will be spoonies.
Spoons have the right idea, cheap pints.
Cheers to Kier Rachael and Wrigley Quigley Liebor is not working. Higher business rates near on 100% increase increased national insurance and wages. etc etc no wonder these businesses can not cope.Liebor out general election now before it is too late.
Used to be a wonderful and busy pub when Jane and her family ran it…
Labour just brought out their new campaign song for the local elections .Another one bites the dust by Queen. No wonder they are polling at 16% all of which must be on benefits or immigrants. Ye olde chocolate teapot must be our first and very last Liebor mp.
Represents Newport …
you were saying about support?
Not a surprise at all, stopped going 9 months ago having given them multiple attempts to show that they have improved.
largely down to poor quality of front of house staff, lack of kitchen staff with exceeding wait times.
food quality and quantity not great either.
a very different experience at the folly and ryde castle which are both greene king.
Since the pandemic people have become lazy.
Look at the NHS for example, majority of staff are
still shirking from home on full pay.
They should get back into the surgeries!
The NHS don’t need the majority of them. A.I could
do their jobs better.
Thought it was about a pub and not about slagging off the nhs
Last went 20 plus years ago used to be very good went a couple of times back to back back then both rubbish food and service never went back..
Perfect acquisition for Robin Hill…..
We personally love the pub. It’s so dog friendly and the staff are really lovely. The food has always been great too. We visit it regularly. I really Hope that it doesn’t close.
Dog friendly might be part of the problem,at least for some off us.
Dog friendly is what many customers want.
Name an island pub that isn’t dog friendly
