SHARKS CLOSE THE GAP AT THE TOP OF DIVISION 1

Shanklin Sharks closed the gap at the top of the Isle of Wight Table Tennis Division 1 table to just 1 point behind Ryde A after their victory over Ryde Royals.

This was a close match with Ryde’s Hugh Idle on top form winning all his matches to put him on 87% win average, the same as Shanklin’s Don Hobbs who gave Idle his toughest contest. It went to the wire with Idle taking the final set 11-8. The match finished 6-4 to Shanklin.

Ryde Raiders continued their good form in Division 1 with a 7-3 victory over Havenstreet Sleepers. Although Havenstreet fought hard only Ollie Staniforth found winning ways with 3 victories, but he had to fight all the way to win 12-10 in the fifth set against Timothy Giles. All the Ryde players won 2 games each, with Mike Prior performing particularly well in his two hard-won victories.

Newport’s 2 Division 1 teams went head to head, with Vics A taking on the Joyce siblings of Vics B. Island Games player Anna Joyce won 2 matches for Vics B but her brothers finished empty-handed owing to the strong performances by Vics A trio Dave Hilliam, John Cornforth and player of the match Paul Freeborn, who won all 3. Sean and Anna Joyce took the doubles in 5 sets and the match ended 7-3 to Vics A.

Havenstreet Locos and Newport Vics C met in a clash at the top of the table which resulted in some high quality exciting games, with Vic’s Trevor Percival player of the match, winning all his games in style, although Havenstreet’s Mike Lee took him to 5 sets. Havenstreet’s Ian Loosemore lost his 100% record and Vic’s Percival is the only player now on 100%. The match ended 8-2 to Vics which keeps them top four points above Havenstreet.

2 newly promoted teams met for the first time this season, Ryde Raptors and Newport Vics D, with the Raptors cruising to an emphatic 8-2 victory. Ryde’s Spike Hughes was named player of the match, winning all 3, to give him a creditable 60% average in his first season in Division 2.
