Shanklin & Godshill Cricket Club have secured promotion to Hampshire Division 2 with a tense 2-wicket win over fellow title contenders Locks Heath in a top-of-the-table showdown at Westhill.
Winning the toss, Locks Heath elected to bat first but lost wickets early in the innings. However, a composed 60 from George McDowell – coming off 68 balls and featuring 8 boundaries – helped steady the ship. He was well supported by Pete Dudley, who made a fluent 42 from 46 deliveries, also hitting 8 fours.
Despite those two contributions, the visitors were dismissed for 207, with extras contributing a hefty 35 runs. Shanklin & Godshill shared the wickets around, with Ben White returning the standout figures of 3-40, while Saksham Sharma and Brett Harper claimed two apiece.
In reply, Shanklin & Godshill lost wickets at regular intervals and looked in trouble midway through the innings. Opener George Niemiec held the innings together with a patient 46 off 89 balls, including 6 boundaries, but the run rate crept above six an over as pressure mounted.
Locks Heath looked to be taking control as more wickets fell in the chase. But with the game slipping away, Tom Quaife turned the momentum with a sensational counterattack, smashing 45 not out from just 28 balls, including 3 fours and 2 sixes.
With 12 needed from the final over, Quaife launched the third ball for six to seal a dramatic two-wicket win and secure promotion for Shanklin & Godshill with one match still to play.

Elsewhere in the division, other results ensured that promotion was guaranteed regardless of bonus points. The club now needs just 8 points from their final fixture to be crowned league champions.
