A total of 60 ladies took part in the Shanklin and Sandown Ladies’ Open on Friday 15th June.

Of the 20 teams competing, 12 had made an early Solent crossing to play in the annual Bowmaker Competition.

Pippa Walker, Fiona Pollard and Barbara O’Boyle from Roehampton Golf Club took first place with 83 points on countback over Angela Williams, Barbara Wareham and Alison Cox from Hayling Island.

Honours also went to Island clubs with Shirley Miles, Sheila Richard and Sue Thompson of Freshwater coming third with 82 points and Bev Whorwood, Annie Wakeling and Vanessa Ford of Newport winning best front 9.

Sheila Richard won the nearest the pin prize landing just 5’ 2” from the pin on the 9th.

2 days later, on Sunday 17th, the club hosted their Mixed Open.

Some 14 teams from mainland clubs, together with 14 teams from Shanklin and Sandown competed in a 4-Ball-Better-Ball Stableford Competition.

Victor and Jean Langley from Osborne Golf Club took the away prize with 42 points on countback over Mike and Pauline Davies from Royal Winchester. Aidie Adams and Debbie Skoludek from Ryde took third with 41 points.

The home winners were Peter and Geraldine Parmenter with 46 points. Terry Harris and Penny Last took second with 45 points and David and Ronnie Hirst were third with 44 points.

Nearest the pin for the ladies was won by Lady Captain Jackie Stephen with Peter Parmenter taking the honours for the men.

On both days competitors were treated to a welcome glass of Pimms after their round, before sitting down to enjoy a delicious meal prepared by Shanklin and Sandown’s chef, Helen Broadhead.
