25-year-old convicted sex offender Ian Willett is back behind bars on remand after breaching the requirements of the sex offenders register – again. Willett, of Nelson Road in Newport, was arrested by plain-clothed officers in the Gunville area on Friday afternoon. He was taken into custody at Newport Police Station and questioned over whether or not he had failed to comply with the notification requirements of the sex offenders register. He was subsequently charged and remanded to appear before Southampton Magistrates Court on Saturday morning. At Saturday’s hearing, Willet pleaded guilty to the offence and was further remanded in custody ahead of sentencing. It was in 2021 that Ian Willett was handed a 40-month prison sentence after sexually assaulting and kidnapping a woman in Newport Town Centre in August 2020. Thankfully, the woman was able to escape Willett’s hands after he dragged her into Church Litten park. By June 2022, Willett had been released from prison on licence. He went missing from the Waterlooville address given to Police for a period of 10 days before being found on the Isle of Wight. He was subsequently charged with 2 counts of breaching the notification requirements of the sex offenders register and was recalled to prison for a breach of his licence conditions. Later that month he was handed an 8-month prison sentence for the notification requirement breaches. Now, 18 months down the line, Willett has pleaded guilty to again breaching the notification requirements legally set upon him. He has been remanded in custody and will next appear before the courts at the Isle of Wight Crown Court on Friday 2nd February 2024. The now-25-year-old has previously been described as ‘a risk to women’ and is subject to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order which prevents him from approaching lone women if likely to cause them fear.
