UPDATED: Part of Ryde Esplanade has been closed by Police following a serious road traffic collision, which has resulted in at least 1 person being rushed to hospital with a Police escort.
Island Echo understands a Citroen van has collided with a 125cc motorcycle leading to serious injuries for both the rider and a pillion passenger.
Police, 3 ambulances and an ambulance officer were called to the scene near The Waterside Pool at around 22:10.
It is thought the male rider has sustained serious leg injuries, whilst the male pillion – who is said to have not been wearing a helmet or protective clothing – has sustained both knee and head injuries. The van driver is thought to have escaped with minor injuries.
The road has been closed in both directions from North Walk to The Strand, although North Walk itself remains open with all exiting traffic using Appley Rise.
UPDATE @ 00:10 – It has been confirmed the motorcycle was being used with L plates, raising a question mark over whether or not a pillion passenger should have been on the bike.
The road remains closed with just 1 Police unit in attendance, with the potential for the arrival of the Collision Investigation Unit from the mainland.
UPDATE @ 01:10 – Ryde Esplanade has now been reopened by Police indicating that the 2 young males are not in a life-threatening condition.
Recovery of the vehicles has been arranged.
UPDATE MONDAY – It has been confirmed that the 2 injuries males are just 16-years-old.
1 has been flown to Southampton General Hospital… https://www.islandecho.co.uk/news/teen-flown-southampton-hospital-following-motorcycle-crash.
