Collision investigators have been called in to examine the scene of a serious crash which has led to the closure of Middle Road between Calbourne and Carisbrooke. Emergency services – including police, fire and ambulance crews – were mobilised to the B3401 Calbourne Road at around 22:30 last night (Sunday). Overnight, the attendance of the mainland-based Collision Investigation Unit from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary was requested to conduct a forensic examination of the crash scene, which continues as dawn breaks. It’s understood the incident has occurred near to Swainston Manor on a section of road covered by trees on either side of the carriageway. Due to the seriousness of the collision, hard road closures have been put in place by Island Roads – at the request of Police – at the junctions with Betty Haunt Lane and Elm Lane. Middle Road is expected to remain closed for several more hours. UPDATE @ 09:45 – A 42-year-old man from Newport – and his pet dog – were killed in last night’s single vehicle collision, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed.
