UPDATED: The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance is in attendance at a serious road traffic collision on Hale Common at Arreton this lunchtime (Thursday).
Police have closed the road at the junction with Watery Lane and at Princelett Shute as emergency services attend to those involved, including a motorcyclist who has been seriously injured.
A Ford Galaxy and a Vauxhall van are present at the scene, where it is thought a vehicle has collided with a motorcyclist. Paramedics and doctors are working on the motorcyclist casualty some distance off the carriageway.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area with the main Sandown to Newport road closed.
UPDATE @ 14:00 – An Island man in his 20s has been airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance with leg and pelvic injuries.
The unnamed man is said to be in a serious but non-critical condition. He has received life-changing injuries as a result of the incident, which has involved a Ford Galaxy.
The motorcycle, a Yamaha, has come to rest in the car park of Jubilee Garden Centre having gone through a small hedge.
Police are appealing for the driver of a red vehicle that was directly behind the Ford Galaxy to come forward. They did not stop at the scene, but may be able to help Police with their enquiries. Anyone with information should contact 101.
A hard road closure has now been put in place by Island Roads. The road is anticipated to remain closed for some time whilst investigations take place.
Motorists are being diverted via Watery Lane and Winford.
UPDATE @ 16:00 – The road has now fully reopened in both directions.
