Police, paramedics and fire crews are all responding to a road traffic collision involving a lorry and a car on Brading Downs Road this afternoon (Thursday).
The crash has on a bend near the junction with Mersley Down Road/Ashey Road.
At the scene a Peugeot has collided head-on with an Isle of Wight Council tipper lorry on the bend before the Ashey Road junction. The Peugeot has sustained significant damage.
It appears as though the Peugeot, travelling towards Brading, has crossed into the path of the lorry heading in the opposite direction.
The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service has several ambulances on scene, alongside an operational commander and a critical care paramedic.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has mobilised fire appliances from Ryde and Newport, alongside the Rescue Support Vehicle from Newport.
The road is closed in both directions between Bulley’s Hill in Brading and Ashey Road. This means traffic diverting around the New Road closure in Brading will now need to travel via St Helens/Bembridge until further notice.
UPDATE @ 16:25 – The occupant of the Peugeot has been helped from the vehicle and conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital.
Police have confirmed he has suffered serious injuries.
Brading Down Road remains closed whilst recovery is arranged.
It remains to be seen how long the road will be closed for.

No such junction
Brading down road?
More utter shit not paying attention driving..at lease off the road.
Wouldn’t be a problem if those inept idiots at Island Roads hadn’t shut down Firecopse….
Nothing to do with it.
If motorists stuck to the speed limit and
stopped overtaking accidents would rarely
happen.
Trains stick to their train lines, they don’t cross
over to oncoming trains.
Safety is imperative, everyday there are unnesseccary
accidents on island roads.
Where if your going to rant at least get name of road correct!!!
So right, its hard to believe its not deliberate. Going out of their way to snarl things up
Wait for “enough is enough” to babble shite
I was just thinking the same. Wonder what the numpty will have to say this time.
I speak the truth.
I am trying to educate numpties like yourself,
but some people cannot be taught discipline
Bless
He’ll be along like a bad smell soon
We wait with baited breath for the word “Numbty”not to appear!
Yes, Numpty, Numpty Numpty, he drives me mad!
We need to get these old drivers re-tested. This is unacceptable.
Where did it state he was an old driver?
Have you not got a new name yet, there is only 1
Enough is Enough
That’s enough for anyone
Lol
I rest my case
Why just the elderly? All ages get involved in “accidents” so lets get everyone retested? That might please Enough is Enough. As for 20 mph, you might as well walk.
20mph is plenty, you will be amazed how far
you will get driving at the safe sensible speed
of 20mph.
Another selfish idiot rushing back to Seaview?
Everyday vehicles cross over into other lanes and many
STILL overtake in dangerous locations eg blindspots/bends
putting other lives at risk
That is why I would like to see a strict speeding limit
on this island to prevent serious accidents.
This is putting a strain on the NHS who have a huge waiting
list as it is.
Slow down and don’t drive onto the wrong side of the road.
YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE, ENJOY LIFE AND STAY SAFE!
Your right there enough,
We were travelling behind this Peugeot. It cut us up from merstone and then drove so erratically that we didnt want to follow it toward the downs so turned off at arreton. Glad we did!!!
Wow, good job you did good choice, that idiot driving the car was so lucky they weren’t killed, what is wrong with people, if you can’t drive properly and stay on your side of the road hand your licence in before you actually kill someone?
How many times do you drive down a road
on the correct side of the road or street
and due to vehicles being parked on the
opposite side of the road, Numpty selfish
motorists cannot wait and drive past the parked
vehicles when they should be waiting to pass
(Risking head on crashes)
I can name loads of roads where this is a constant
problem, Easthill and Westhill Road plus many more.
locations.
People just cannot wait, what happened to being
polite, that’s how it used to be in the good old days.
It is shocking the amount of numpties driving around
with no insurance, if one cannot afford to be on the road
then don’t drive.
Vehicles are like weapons if not used correctly.
I read recently that some councils on the mainland
are going to stop large vehicles parking in council
car parks due to being too big.
So many vehicles are too big for small island roads
large sized vehicles need to be taxed heavily.
Also large vans that clutter the roads and streets
blocking other motorists vision, not to mention
blocking pavements etc.
Something drastic needs to be done. I doubt
it will though, IW Council don’t understand
road safety.
Jersey have a maximum speed limit of 40mph
the Isle of Wight need to take a leaf out of their book
or better still 20mph. It works well in the Big Smoke.
IT IS ENFORCED WITH CAMERAS AND SAVES LIVES
WHAT’S THE RUSH, ANYONE WOULD THINK PEOPLE
HAVE SOMEWHERE TO GO, JUST LEAVE HOME EARLIER!
But it is not enforced in London. Cameras were installed but lobby by motorists had them removed. It was called a money making enterprise by the councils & unfair. Consequently the 20 mph is ignored
I don’t know why so many vehicles drive erratically
If they want to drive erratically they can book a day
out at brands hatch or play arcade car games.
It looks like a cut corner job
Some friends of mine were involved in a ‘head on ‘ collision. Both cars were travelling at about fifteen miles per hour. There were broken ribs involved. The one collision type one must try to avoid, is a ‘head on.
I see in comment driving like a wanker hope police go hard on him..
Insurance will probably be void.
More bad driving on the Iow
There are so muppets who just can’t stay on the correct side of the road. This fool should be banned for reckless driving
Bravo, could have killed an innocent person.
Can’t blame the lorry then, WTF is the car doing on his side of the road?
