A prolific thief with more than 115 previous convictions has been jailed for 9 further shoplifting offences in Ryde and Newport.
Earlier this month, Russell, of no fixed abode was jailed for 12 weeks after stealing alcohol, food, electrical items and beauty products from stores including Co-Op and Tesco between 4th April and 8th May.
Russell has appeared on Island Echo numerous times over the course of his criminal career. Most recently, he was handed a 20-week sentence back in February having admitted theft of £60 worth of goods from Poundland in Ryde and £118.50 of alcohol from Co-op on January 30th as well as theft of £32.25 worth of goods from Poundland on 2nd February.
Responding to news of the sentencing, a spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary said:
“We are relentlessly pursuing offenders and continue to target those responsible for business and retail crime. We are aware there are victims behind every business and we are focusing on some new initiatives with retailers and businesses.”
“We are hoping to restore confidence around reporting business crime and bringing those offenders to justice. If you are a business owner or manager we would like to meet you and for you to be involved in moving this forward so please email us at [email protected]”

Oh wow 12 weeks that’s will really put him off you watch he will never be on island echo ever again
Old rumpelstiltskin will never learn.
Put him in a sack and throw him in the sea.
All well and good the Police catching crims, but no good if the courts can’t give meaningful sentences as our prisons are filled with not only our own, but now, much of the third worlds rejects.
Since mobile phone technology, these beings are no longer forced to sit and await the Oxfam or Unicef aid lorry, as now they can follow instructions of how to come direct to the ‘source’ of aid and then many ‘abuse’ the hand that feeds.
So, never again will ‘meaningful’ sentences ever be given.
Points OUGHT to be given which ‘stay’ with the perpetrator and once hit 100, put down.
So brutal murder = 100 instantly, yet stealing would accrue say 10, so NINE more thefts and you swing.
“These beings” are human beings. Your comments are racists. How can you go from an Isle of Wight shop lifting resident, to quoting Oxfam and UNICEF? You should be ashamed that you have used this platform to wage your racism, using the same method and technology that you claim “these beings” have used. SHAME ON YOU, Mr not so smart.
How is that racist? Get a life and maybe an evening class….
Alexander, that’s the most sensible comment i have read in a long time.
Clearly he didn’t serve the full 20 weeks from February, otherwise he would not have been out to thieve yet again. Pathetic by the judges
120+ convictions. And they have the cheek to talk about justice.
How do you get 20wks in February yet be out before May and offend again? Because you only do half sentence. So this 12wks will be only 6 etc. 115 times – how many others he’s got away with?. System needs to change and he needs something else – Hypnosis, Electric shock ,ball and shakles or permanent lock up.
Good to see the police looking after the multi national companies. £100 says if it was your house or shed that got robbed all you’d get is a crime reference number. The police are a joke.
If this waste of oxygen robbed my shed I’d smash him up, drag him up the rd and leave him, the cops would more than likely pat you on the back for doing so, there’s no changing scum bags like this, they need putting down!
115 previous convictions.
Obviously the sentences he’s been given previously aren’t a deterrent.
So, what’s the answer with people like this? What do we do with them?
Lock him up for longer? Make him do work in some form of workhouse? I honestly don’t know, but what I do know is that people like this shouldn’t be part of society.
12 weeks free board and lodgings plus some free entertainment and sports facilities.
Will be out in 6 if he behaves….
If you stopped reporting this pathetic individual’s ‘accomplishments’ he would be deprived of an audience,His petty thieving is his way of achieving notoriety, having no imagination, nor the required skills to sate this desire routinely, he performs frequent, yet minor, acts of pilfering, Remove the spotlight that you shine upon him and he is exposed for the insecure fraud he really is.
conversely, by not publicising it, you give him the cloak of anonymity, which ensures less people are aware of him and he has greater chances to thieve.
