UPDATED: Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat, Freshwater Independent Lifeboat and Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team are all involved in the search for a overturned kayak off St Catherine’s Point this afternoon (Tuesday).
A search and rescue operation has been launched after what Island Echo understands to be an overturned kayak was spotted off the South Coast of the Island by a passing boat.
Sandown Lifeboat hit the water at around 14:15, with Freshwater Lifeboat following suit around 30 minutes later.
Both crews are currently conducting a search at the most southerly point of the Isle of Wight, whilst Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team search along the shore and from the cliff tops near to Rocken End.
There is currently no indication that any persons are in the water, however a full search is being conducted to rule out the possibility.
Anyone that has lost a kayak recently, or knows of the circumstances behind this kayak at St Catherine’s Point, is asked to contact the Maritime and Coastguard Agency on 02392 552100.
UPDATE @ 16:38 – The search has now drawn to a close, with emergency teams returning to station.
Nothing has been found.
