Sam’s Chicken in Ryde has been handed a zero food hygiene rating by the Isle of Wight Council’s Environmental Health inspectors.
The Union Street takeaway is the latest establishment on the Island discovered to be falling well below acceptable standards, with Ventnor Winter Gardens and Shorwell Village Store also recently being awarded the lowest possible rating.
According to the inspection report, major improvement is necessary when it comes to hygienic food handling which includes the preparation, cooking and storage of food.
Urgent improvement is required in respect of the management of food safety – systems and checks in place to ensure food is safe to eat.
Inspectors also found that improvement is necessary when it comes to the cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building, including hand washing facilities and pest control.
When the takeaway first opened it was rated ‘good’ (4) by health inspectors, but this dropped to a 2 ‘improvement necessary’ rating in January of last year. The latest inspection took place early last month.
UPDATE – A representative of Sam’s Chicken has said that the reason for the failings revolves around trying to keep up with the maintenance of an old building, alongside a few extra requirements from inspectors.
They say that building maintainance required to be carried out following the recent inspection has been completed and the store is awaiting an inspector to return for a re-inspection.
Sam’s Chicken says they are doing everything they can to fix the problems encountered.
Full details of what inspectors found are expected to be revealed in the coming days…
That’s not good won’t be going there
quite shocking for a takeaway which is part of a chain to get a zero since it would/should have some regional oversight even if a franchise.
no excuse, should have pride in their food and shop.
It should be shut down immediately, along with all the other places that get a zero rating
I agree with you on those places being shut down till they have put in all the recommendations.
Makes one wonder who would be responsible if someone becomes ill between the time the zero rating and improvements are implemented?
probably a toilet to start with
Just stop using these places and cook yourself.
Dirty filthy places with god knows what in your meal.
If the place is dirty then the people cooking it are not concerned with cleanliness.
You would think that during the lockdown last year when nothing was being cooked in these places they would have spent the time DEEP CLEANING and generally looking at all the kitchen equipment, food, dates etc and paintwork but no, they sat on their bottoms or it would all be 4s and 5s.
I would not eat anymore and pay for a dose of food poisoning.
No place for complaints really, as long as the food is good an no one gets sick. There is option to cook at home and yes, it can be done along a job and children. But convenience is more important. I go to restaurant every now and then but I never use takeaway. Dirtiest places.
Not all takeaways are dirty, not all restaurants are clean
Places like this should be permanently closed down as they are a danger to everyone’s health.
Its great that I.E. are publishing this sort on news as otherwise you wouldn’t necessarily be aware of it. Keep it up please I.E. another one to add to my list of never to go to places.
It’s good the inspectors are out there ,just hope they keep it up on a regular basis and even surprising takeaways etc unannounced.
ive actually walked out of fish a chip shops due to watching the staff serving infront of me ,no gloves bare hands touching everything in sight including filthy cash and as for washing them at least between customers is non existent
And their very presence degrades the general aesthetics of what is largely a fairly decent street of shops.Hope they tank.
Omg why don’t they close them down ?????
There is no excuse for this …
Surely they have training?????
Whatever happened to taking pride in your job ?
Clean as you go should be the motto for all food establishments,
People pay for food not gastric flu !!!!!.
Slack sloppy shoddy.
= Shut ….
I am shocked and saddened by this news! We get a sams every so often because it’s always been really tasty? So sad really; I’m afraid it’s going to be a miss then from now on.
