The 2 Newport Vics teams suffered heavy defeats this week at the hands of 2 Ryde teams. However, Vics A’s Dave Hilliam remained unbeaten in their 7-3 defeat by Ryde B, and was player of the match, whilst in the 9-1 drubbing of Vics B by league leaders Ryde A, Vics B’s Barry Joyce had a fine win over Rob Smith. Ryde Goshawks suffered a 10-0 defeat by Shanklin A, despite some close matches, but Shanklin’s Michael Bulpitt, Mike Turner and Don Hobbs were unstoppable. Ryde C remain in second place behind Ryde A and are in contention for top spot after their 8-2 victory over Ryde Ravens.

In Division 2…
Match of the week in Division 2 was between Ryde Rockets and Wootton Wanderers, and it went on late into the night, with all 10 games going to 4 or 5 sets. Player of the match was Wootton’s Alan Dennis, but the Rocket’s junior player Jye Lock had two great wins over Neil Hedges and Trevor Jones. With the Rockets 5-4 down going into the doubles, their pairing of Maggie Preston and Tim Wakeley took the game in the 5th set, and the match ended in a draw. Havenstreet Hooters and Ryde Rascals also had a close match, which ended 6-4 to the Rascals, leaving the teams tying for 2nd place, behind Newport Vics C.

In Division 3…
The derby match between the 2 Shorwell teams – the Spinners and the Saints – proved interesting, as the lower ranked Saints got the better of the Spinners and won 6-4, with the Saint’s Kevin Williams winning all his games and player of the match. Division Three leaders Newport Vics D met 2nd-placed Ryde Retailers, and the match ended 8-2 to Newport, with their sub Richard Jackson on fine form and player of the match.
