RYDE HAVE INDOOR CRICKET TITLE IN THEIR HANDS

After a dramatic evening in Division 1 of the Leslies Motors Indoor Cricket League, it is Ryde who are now favourites to lift the title.

Having won both games they played at Cowes Enterprise College last Sunday, including a crushing triumph over previously unbeaten EPP, Ryde are now only 14 points behind the long time leaders and a win in their final game in 2 weeks’ time against Brading should see them retain their crown.

Playing in their final game of the campaign, EPP only needed to avoid defeat in the top of the table clash to take the title but suffered their first setback of the season as they were bowled out for a mere 65 chasing Ryde’s 100-3 (Mark Oatley 27 not out).

Earlier Ryde had also bowled Brading out for just 80 and chased it down in just 8 overs thanks to not out scores from Dave Pratt (25) and Mark Oatley (26).

The other Div 1 game saw Shanklin & Godshill 1 defeat Prison Officers by 85 runs. Joe Newnham with 34 not out and Phil Mew 27 not out dominated the Shanklin & Godshill 1 score of 150-1 and, although Martyn Richards top scored with 26 for Prison Officers, it was Seb Egerton-Read’s bowling (3-13) that saw the Officers bowled out for 66.

Island Bakeries are now clear leaders in Div 2 following a hard fought 21 run win against Newport. The game was dominated by Bakeries’ Kieron Annis who scored 42 not out in his side’s 151-4 and then took 3-36 as Newport were bowled out for 130 (Guy Wells 36).

Cowes have moved into 2nd place after they defeated Shanklin & Godshill 2 by 3 wickets. Steve Egerton-Read top scored with 36 for the Westhill side as they totaled 103-5 but Jason Heap with 25 not out made sure Cowes reached their target.

The league switches its matches to Rew Valley Sports Centre in Ventnor for the final 2 weeks of the season. Rew Valley will also be the venue on Sunday (17th) when Ryde represent the Island in the County Play Off of the ECB Indoor National Club Championship by taking on Dorset county winners Bashley (Rydal). The game starts at 15:45 with the winners going on to the Regional Play Offs in Taunton.
