Firefighters from Ryde have been mobilised to Southampton as mainland crews battle a major blaze that has engulfed 3 industrial units next to St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton. 1 of 2 Aerial Ladder Platforms based on the Island has been sent across the Solent to provide fire cover in the Southampton area as efforts to contain and extinguish the fire on Marine Parade continue. The initial call came in at 13:05 and now 18 fire engines are on scene, as well as other specialist vehicles. The fire has forced the postponement of Saints’ Championship football match against Preston North End tonight, which will be disappointing for Island fans planning to travel across this evening. Red Funnel has confirmed that they will still be operating the additional 23:40 Red Jet departure from Southampton and the 00:15 from West Cowes this evening. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service is advising people in the area to keep windows and doors closed due to the amount of smoke.
UPDATE Thursday – The incident continues with 4 pumps and 1 Aerial Ladder Platform – and other specialist vehicles – still in attendance. It’s thought Ryde’s ALP remains in Southampton.
