Ryde C have tightened their grip on the Division 1 top spot with an emphatic victory, as Havenstreet A and Ryde B fought to a thrilling 5-5 stalemate.
Ryde C extended their Division 1 lead by defeating bottom-placed Ryde Revellers 9-1, with Steve Mills securing the Revellers’ only point against Joe Chapman.
Havenstreet A and Ryde B produced a gripping contest, with Ryde’s Alex Rorke unbeaten and named player of the match. Havenstreet’s Roger Hookey edged out Tim Giles in an epic five-set battle, clinching the final set 11-4. Havenstreet’s Michael Bulpitt won 2 matches and junior Jye Lock 1.
Heading into the deciding doubles at 5-4 to Havenstreet, the tension rose as 4 of the 5 sets went to deuce. Ryde took the doubles, earning a deserved 5-5 draw.
In Division 2, Newport Vics held the top 2 places as Vics A beat Ryde Rising Stars 10-0 and Vics B overtook them in the standings. Despite the scoreline, young cadets Thane Taylor and Theo Lewis impressed, pushing Rob Warren to 5 sets and John Cornforth to 4. The doubles also went to 5 sets, narrowly won by Cornforth and Barry Joyce.
Elsewhere, Ryde Retailers and Shorwell Sinners drew 5-5 in a close contest. Ryde’s Joe Millward won 2, while Shorwell’s Guy Golbourn was unbeaten and named player of the match.
In Division 3, Wroxall Warriors B moved into 2nd place after beating clubmates Wroxall Warriors C 6-4. Newport Vics C defeated Cowes Baptists 7-3, with Cowes’ John Featherstone unbeaten. Shorwell Saints and Shorwell Saviours both claimed 7-3 victories against Ryde Raiders and Wroxall Legendary Lizards respectively.
