A Royal Mail lorry has become stuck on Binstead Road in Ryde this morning (Wednesday), after seemingly driving past several road closed signs before becoming lodged on a grass bank while attempting to turn around.
The incident occurred at around 08:30 as the articulated lorry, which had just left the Royal Mail delivery office in Ryde and was heading towards the ferry terminal to return to the mainland, encountered the ongoing roadworks on Binstead Road.
Full 24‑hour closures on the road are in place until the end of January as part of a major improvement scheme, with official diversions clearly signed for motorists to follow.
It is understood that the lorry driver drove past 2 separate road closed signs before realising that no further progress could be made due to the works taking place. The driver then attempted to reverse and turn the vehicle around, but in doing so became stuck, with the heavy vehicle ending up straddling the carriageway and partially mounted on a grass bank.
Motorists are again reminded to adhere to road closure signage and use the recommended diversion routes while the Binstead Road improvement works continue throughout January.
UPDATE @ 13:00 – The lorry has now been cleared.

No Island Roads are lazy and lethargic are clearing road signs leaving drivers wondering whether road is still closed or open and Island Road workers have b……….d off looking for overtime pay at weekends to pick.them up!!it’s becoming more and more of a problem The Island!,you have no idea of this drivers qualifications,it’s like saying your an “OAP with to much time on their hands far to much on a keyboard who is Billy no mates”perhaps not a big imagine.

visiting the island.
Island Roads are different to mainland Roads.
Well, given that IR/IWC have issued the following two contradictory instructions:
“Wootton Station Road, Briddlesford Road, Mersley Road, Mersley Down Road, Brading Down Road, New Road, Brading High Street, Rowborough Lane, Beaper Shute, Brading Road, and Marlborough Road”
and:
“A diversion will be in place for traffic via Queens Road, Mayfield Road, St Vincents Road, Broadway Crescent, Jellicoe Road and Ringwood Road, before rejoining Binstead Road”
the driver might reasonably have decided that neither was suitable for a vehicle of that size or a serious diversion since he would have been working against the clock.
Not that we should be allowing trucks of that size on Island roads anyway, given their narrowness and poor construction.

They aren’t contradictory instructions. The diversions you have provided suggest that there is one diversion towards Ryde and another, different diversion when leaving Ryde, in order to avoid congestion on either route. A little common sense wouldn’t go amiss.
I won’t even touch on the idea that the truck shouldn’t have been on our roads to begin with; clearly, your bubble doesn’t expand to view the bigger picture.
I am, however, not defending the driver. They should be penalised for failing to adhere to the road signage in place.
Utter rubbish, binstead estate not suitable for hgvs however island roads to blame on this one as road closed signs and diversion signs aren’t suitable for hgvs!
I am a HGV driver and I was there yes the driver should of adhere to the road closure signs, however the diversion route is not 6ft 6 restricted so he is entitled to go via the Binstead estate, also it would help having a recommended route for HGVs to avoid the area.
Hence common sense. Find a suitable, alternative route. Impatience and poor forward planning.
In a vehicle that size, especially a mainlander not knowing the roads….where was he going to stop and turn round having seen the signs? Nipping down Mayfield wouldn’t have been an option…..
Nothing in the diversion instructions states that the two routes are for different directions, simply that they are different routes. Anyone not familiar with IR’s weird diversion practices would not make any assumption.

Its trucks that size, Tesco, Sainsburys, Post office etc that have caused the damage to the road surface there (route from ferry)
Buses cause the problem due to vibration caused by low tick over, but yes trucks too the answer is don’t buy stuff including your Guitar or amps everything at some point arrives on a lorry, more we want stuff the more Lorry’s will be needed it’s unfortunate life today.

The road closed signs are completely misleading. Driving from Ryde they specifically state ‘no access to Newport’. Logically this means there should be access to the ferry. I drove past 2 road closed signs yesterday…..because it was the only way possible to reach my destination at Ryde House Road.
Some drivers are under the impression that the road closed sign will not apply to them, like the idiots who drove up hunnyhill this morning, sometimes it works and then sometimes you are left a bit red faced like this plonker in his lorry.
That is why we need islandwide cameras.

Make Jellicoe road one way only, for ALL users. Brain dead council. And, make Island Roads work past 3pm. Couldn’t run a market stall.
Locals are aware of where the road is closed however; the number of times road closed signs are put up when the road is not closed and the number of times when they are not put up when the road is closed is frequent as are the times when traffic lights ahead signs are left up when the traffic lights are non operational and the extremely confusing diversion signs which often conflict with other road closure diversion signs
Totally agree, the road closed signs should also state where the road is actually blocked, as sometimes you can still get to your destination before the actual roadworks.n
