Motorists are facing further travel disruption in the East Wight with the closure of the through road in Newchurch this morning (Tuesday). A burst 6-inch water main has led to the closure of Winford Road, between Wackland Lane and Harbors Lake Lane. This means that drivers are now unable to travel through Newchurch in either direction, with access to the village from the north only. It comes at the same time that Lake Hill is closed for roadworks, which is leading to heavier traffic than usual in the Sandown and Lake areas. Many motorists have utilised Newchurch as an alternative diversion route, as have those heading to Ventnor via Whitely Bank. It’s thought the burst occurred shortly before 09:00 this morning with around 100mm of water flooding the carriageway. Some locals properties are without supply as a result. Southern Water engineers are on site and work to repair the main is underway. Residnets are reminded that when the water supply does return, they may notice some discolouration or low pressure at first; this is completely normal when there’s been a disruption to the supply and is only temporary. It is unknown how long the road is likely to be closed for.
