UPDATED: Forest Road in Newport has been closed in both directions this morning (Monday) as a result of a car hitting a gas main.
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are currently in attendance at the ‘Albany Centre’ with appliances from Newport, Ryde and East Cowes, plus the Incident Support Unit from East Cowes.
Emergency services were alerted to the incident at 10:20, with fears of fire or explosion.
Southern Gas Networks engineers are working with fire crews to make the scene safe.
UPDATE @ 11:30 – Firefighters from Ryde and the Incident Support Unit from East Cowes have been stood down from the incident, which has been brought under control.
Although the scene is now safe, engineers are continuing to work towards isolating the supply completely.
It is unknown when the road will reopen.
UPDATE @ 12:19 – Forest Road has now reopened in both directions following the safe conclusion of the incident.
