A 12-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of rape after a young girl was allegedly sexually assaulted in an Isle of Wight recreation ground.
An investigation has been launched amid an allegation that a girl, aged over 10, was raped at Wootton Recreation Ground at some point last Friday (22nd August).
The alarming incident has only come to light after Police responded to reports of a confrontation between a boy and a man at the same recreation ground last night (Wednesday).
The alleged serious sexual offence was disclosed to attending officers, which resulted in the arrest of a 12-year-old boy.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary says that enquiries are ongoing to establish what happened, and specifically trained officers are supporting the girl and her family.
The suspect has been conditionally bailed until 27th November while enquiries continue.
A spokesperson for the force has said:
“Anyone with any concerns can speak to one of our uniformed Neighbourhood Policing Team Officers who will be patrolling the area”.
