Scott And Josh

Scott Howard is to walk a half-marathon along the coast between Sandown and Ryde, whilst dressed as Captain America, to raise money for 6-year-old Joshua Curtis, who has Juvenile MLD.

Scott’s GoFundMe page has already raised £1,610 for Josh – over a week before the day of the walk itself on Sunday 26th June.

6-year-old Chelsea fan Josh has been diagnosed with Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (also known as Juvenile MLD). The illness was diagnosed after concerns with Josh’s mobility. After several tests and scans, white matter changes were seen in his brain and the diagnosis was confirmed.

This condition – which causes the nerves in the brain to stop working properly – is an extremely rare and life-limiting disease, which affects approximately 1 in 140,000 children. Sadly, there is no known cure.

Scott Howard – who is Josh’s great-uncle – decided to do a fundraising event to enable Josh to participate in activities and travel before there is any further deterioration in his condition.

He would also like to see his favourite team Chelsea win a game as when he travelled to Stamford Bridge to watch them play Brentford at the end of last season, they lost. Josh has yet to visit the Isle of Wight.

Scott will also donate to charities which are supporting Josh, such as Make a Wish and Shooting Star hospice. He hopes that this event and others can raise awareness of Juvenile MLD and the need for newborn screening.

Scott says of his walk:

“I am doing the walk to create memories for Josh before his condition deteriorates and raise awareness of Juvenile MLD. The Island is a beautiful place to do the walk.”

Scott Howard has the support of his employer – South Western Railway – for the fundraising event. Around 6 of his work colleagues will accompany him on the walk. Refreshments will be supplied at the end by the SWR Island Line team at Ryde.

The charity walk on Sunday 26th June will start at around 10:00 in Sandown and will cover a half marathon distance of 13.2 miles. Anyone is welcome to participate in the walk or come along to support the event.

The theme of the walk is superheroes or favourite characters. Scott Howard will be dressed as Captain America as this is Josh’s favourite Marvel character. Those planning to join in the walk are encouraged to dress up.

Anyone wishing to contribute towards helping Josh may do so on Scott’s fundraising page. Cash donations may also be made at the ticket office in Ryde Esplanade railway station.
