Public toilets at Lake Slipway on the Isle of Wight have been forced to close after vandals caused extensive damage and attempted to start a fire inside the facilities.
Lake Parish Council says the incident has resulted in significant damage, with the toilets now shut while urgent repairs are carried out. The council hopes the facilities will be ready to reopen in time for Easter.
The damage includes a kicked-in door, broken cubicles and a damaged towel dispenser. Paper towels were also set alight inside the building, resulting in what has been described as an arson attempt.
Chair of Lake Parish Council, Paul Brading, has said:
“This is another example of mindless vandalism in Lake, and across the Bay, and the costs financially, and potential cost if the fire spread, is significant and we will work with the Police, and other agencies, to hold those responsible to account.”
Contractors were able to extinguish the fire and make the building temporarily safe.
Cllr Brading has also said:
“Thanks to the contractors for putting the fire out and making the facility safe temporarily, while we will maintain the Ladies toilet as a unisex facility, and will try and re-open as soon as we can.”
The Parish Council says repairs will now take place in the hope the toilets can reopen before the Easter period.

What is it with Islanders and toilets, what do they teach
these numpties in school!, makes one wonder.
Toilets are for body waste usages, not for numpties to vandalise
them.
Islandwide CCTV is required, more police walking the streets
and if they see a bunch of numpties loitering, then move them on.
“All these unnesseccary costs increase our taxes”
I imagine the persons who carry out such acts parents etc
are probably living a life on benefits and don’t respect such buildings.
Any person paying FULL taxes would know it is wrong to carry out
such acts!, because persons paying taxes pay for these buildings.
If these persons are caught and they are on benefits, take their
benefits away from them.
China have the right idea how to deal with such persons
take away their privileges.
Job done.
Outside cameras would be great, if they can be funded. Then, get the perpetrators to pay for the repairs, and carry out some of the work…
The best ever island toilets use to be at Falcon Cross in
Shanklin, they were manned and back in the day they cost
20p but they were well kept and were NUMPTY free.
I am happy to pay 50p or a £1 if such places were
manned and RIFF RAFF NUMPTIES didn’t enter and
when they are locked up at night they have steel
shutters and cameras etc.
The fees to use such places would pay the wages for
the staff and maintenance etc.
Much better in the long run, it is the only way to deal
with SCUM NUMPTIES who disrespect buildings etc.
Absolutely simple ways work the best!.
Outside cameras will prove nothing in a court of law, only people entered then left. That would not prove that they caused any damage.
Good idea, Best Before, especially making the perpetrators repair the damage and pay material and court costs, but we all k ow it ain’t going to happen.
It should happen, we are a soft touch.
Mindless, brainless morons, no other words really
