UPDATED: A number of major changes for parking on the Isle of Wight have been approved at this evening’s Executive meeting at County Hall, Newport.
Despite major public objection, plans have been approved to remove free parking at Appley and Puckpool car parks in Ryde and at both Medina and The Heights Leisure Centres. The 30-minute free parking at Moa Place, Freshwater will also be removed, however a further consultation is due to take place on this.
A petition for Appley and Puckpool gained more than 3000 signatures with a further 1200 signatures for the Moa Place petition. In addition, nearly 600 objections were directly sent to the Isle of Wight Council and a grand total of 10,000 signatures placed against multiple petitions.
As the news broke this evening, Island Echo readers expressed their anger at the decision labeling the acceptance of the proposals as ‘disgusting’ and ‘disgraceful’.
All but one of the proposals have been accepted, with it being decided that parking charges will not be extended to 20:00 at night and will remain at the current 18:00.
UPDATE TUESDAY: Campaigner and organiser of the Appley petition, Tony Gibbs, has told Island Echo that the battle is set to continue with questions to be answered by the Isle of Wight Council.
