UPDATED: Police have this morning (Monday) launched an investigation into the theft of a safe from the Horse and Groom pub in Ningwood overnight.
During the early hours of this morning it is said that the rural pub on the main Newport to Yarmouth road was broken into via an external cellar door and, within minutes, the safe – containing a considerable amount of money – was lifted and taken away.
This latest incident comes after a series of safe thefts at the tail end of 2015 in which 3 businesses in the pub trade were targeted by unknown burglars. The Waverley Pub in Carisbrooke on 7th November, The Village Inn in Shanklin on 14th November and Island Ales near Yarmouth on 28th November.
Just last week a safe was stolen from The Fountain Hotel in Cowes.
The Horse and Groom remains open for business as normal today.
UPDATE TUESDAY – Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed they are linking Sunday’s safe theft with the thefts of other safes from pubs across the Isle of Wight.
No one has yet been arrested in connection with the crimes.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Newport CID on 101 quoting 44160119549. Information can be given anonymously by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
