Over a hundred protestors gathered in Newport on Saturday (26th February) to oppose legislation they believe may restrict Islanders’ human rights.
The demonstration – which went by the name ‘Shoulder to Shoulder’ – was organised by local community action group Island Friends. Its main aim was to oppose the rewriting of the Human Rights Act.
The gathering was addressed by possibly the world’s best-known conspiracy theorist and Ryde resident, David Icke, who has now been banned from all significant social media platforms.
Island resident Toby Brown – who also addressed the crowd – said:
“The replacement of the Human Rights Act is ‘dictatorship legislation’. In future, you won’t be able to challenge the government in court.
“The government had previously tried to pass legislation to prevent the Iraq War protestor Brian Haw from demonstrating outside parliament, but this legislation was thrown out by the courts. Now, legislation will not be subject to judicial review. This means the end of checks and balances in our democracy.
“The Online Safety Bill (designed to prevent harm to minors accessing inappropriate content) will stop us from viewing anything the Government does not want us to see from porn to political opinions.”
When asked whether the protest was an anti-vax demonstration, Toby replied:
“Our issues are purely digital not medical. How can we be pro-choice and tell people not to take vaccines?”
In response to the question as to whether the protest had been a success, Toby said:
“I believe the gathering was a success. It was great to see so many like-minded Islanders coming together in 1 place.”
