A team from HMP Isle of Wight has taken home the trophy at the first-ever Tesco 5-a-side charity football tournament, held at The Bay School in Sandown last Sunday (1st June), raising £600 for the children’s ward at St Mary’s Hospital.
The event, which ran for 6 hours, brought together 10 teams in a day of friendly yet competitive football, all in aid of a good cause.
Players, supporters, and volunteers gathered at the Sandown venue, creating a vibrant atmosphere while helping to raise much-needed funds for local healthcare services.
Organised by Tesco, the tournament marked a new community initiative designed to blend sport and charitable giving.
Jan Gibson, Community Champion, has said:
“We are delighted to have raised this significant amount for the hospital.
“The event proved so successful that we have been asked to run it again next year and plans are being prepared to do so.”
The success of the tournament has already sparked conversations about making it an annual fixture on the Isle of Wight’s community calendar.
Well done, every little helps.
And a great event it was
