UPDATED WITH VIDEO: A popular stretch of beach in Sandown has been cordoned off by Police this morning (Sunday) as they investigate what is being described as an assault.
Eastern Beach between the Avenue Road Slipway and Driftwood Beach Bar has been cordoned off with officers standing guard at the scene.
Island Echo understands Hampshire Constabulary are investigating an assault, however further details are currently unavailable.
Other areas of the beach remain open as normal.
UPDATE @ 11:45 – Forensic investigators have arrived the beach this morning and are conducting an examination of the area.
Police are yet to comment on the incident.
UPDATE @ 12:37 – It has been confirmed that officers are investigating an alleged sexual assault on a 21-year-old female.
The incident is said to have occurred sometime between 03:00 and 04:00 this morning.
Investigations continue.
UPDATE MONDAY @ 12:55 – Hampshire Constabulary have today confirmed that the investigation into the alleged sexual assault has been dropped due to insufficient evidence.
