A BMW X5 Roads Policing Unit vehicle has collided with a VW Golf at the junction with Gordon Close, resulting in the Golf impacting head-on with a zebra crossing light some distant down the road.
Fire crews from Ryde and Sandown have responded to the incident and have cut free one person from the civilian car. The extent of their injuries is currently unclear, however they have been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital by land ambulance.
A second ambulance has arrived at the scene and is attending to a Police officer with neck and back pain, however is out of the Police car.
UPDATE @ 14:15 – One Police officer involved in the collision has been conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital, also by land ambulance. Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
One appliance from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has returned to station.
The two casualties, including an elderly female, have received non-life threatening injuries and are recieving treatment at St Mary’s Hospital, Newport.
UPDATE @ 16:15 – Police have reopened The Broadway in both directions. The vehicles involved have been recovered by Bartletts Service Station.
Witnesses have described to Island Echo how the Police vehicle was responding on blue lights and sirens at speed from the Lake direction when it was involved in a collision with the VW Golf, which pulled out into its path.
The male Police officer and the elderly female driver of the VW Golf remain in hospital.
