VIDEO: Police have sealed off a street in Ryde after a fire broke out during the early hours of this morning (Sunday), as live reported by Island Echo.
Officers have set up an inner cordon on Union Road around the area where the fire started between Tennyson House and The New Carnival Company, with an outer cordon for the remainder of the narrow lane at the junctions with Castle Street and Cross Street.
Four appliances from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service tackled the blaze after being alerted to the incident at around 01:00. Although the fire spread to roof space, crews brought the incident under control by 04:00 and all crews left the scene by 06:00.
Residents, who were evacuated from their properties, have told Island Echo how it is believed a mattress was set on fire inside a storage building that houses the gas connections.
No one has been injured in the incident.
Investigations are now underway to determine the cause of the blaze and to establish if arson has occurred.
