In the wake of this month’s tragic firearms incident in Plymouth, which resulted in 6 deaths, the Police & Crime Commissioner for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight has moved to reassure local residents about Hampshire’s approach to firearms licencing.
It has been reported in the national media that Jake Davison was handed back his licence and firearm, despite clearly displaying some serious mental health concerns.
Donna Jones, PCC for Hampshire and Isle of Wight, has said:
“Following the tragic incident in Plymouth, my thoughts remain with the families of those who died and the police officers who were first on the scene. This cannot and must not happen again.
“Hampshire Constabulary require a GP reference to be included when firearms licences are made, before issuing or processing gun licences. Previously when GP references were requested after an application was processed, very few GPs responded. The point of the reference is to assess a person’s suitability to own a firearm and enable any mental health issues to be considered.
“Furthermore, if someone in possession of a firearm licence seeks help and support from their GP for any mental health-related issue, their GP is obliged to report the mental health issue to Hampshire Constabulary’s Firearms unit for revocation of the licence.
“By insisting on a GP reference at the point of application, Hampshire Constabulary has built in an additional layer of protection for the public.”
No one should have a firearm in their house. If you want to fire a gun join a gun club that will lock your gun away when you leave. No “ifs” and no “buts”.
Yea that’s a good idea .everyone’s guns all in one place .what a stupid comment .you idiots seem to think people just leave their guns propped up against the fridge .you have no idea what You are talking about .
Well that’s a good start. I do feel there should be a lot more scrutiny by the Fire Arms Licensing Department before any new or renewal licences are issued.
The priority of essential license holders like farmers, gun clubs etc should be prioritized over all single persons who just want it to shoot rabbits etc.
I think if you want to hold a license to own a gun of any kind at your home address or away from a registered licensed controlled and inspected club in the UK you need to be able to prove the necessity for you to have that license?
All those things are already in place. This is the usuall knee jerk reaction to get again persecute innocent gun owners .
TAKING AWAY A GUN Licence DOES NOT!!!! STOP A PERSON FROM HAVING AND USING A GUN if they are to stop gun crime, take away the gun from the offender
