UPDATED: Police have cordoned off a path opposite HMP Isle of Wight this evening (Sunday) following what is understood to be a serious assault.
Several officers are on scene between Hewitt Cresent and Partridge Road opposite the entrance to Parkhurst prison. A path that runs alongside the main Newport-Cowes road has been taped off at both ends.
Island Echo understands a 39-year-old man has sustained serious head injuries following an assault by 3 individuals, but is said to be doing ‘okay’.
UPDATE @ 18:20 – Investigations are underway tonight after 3 men are said to have pulled up in a car before assaulting the man with ‘bats and chains’.
The father from Newport managed to stagger to the nearby hospital before collapsing. He is being cared for by doctors at St Mary’s.
A silver BMW 3-Series estate has been recovered from Seaview Road in Cowes as part of the ongoing Police investigation.
UPDATE @ 20:35 – Scenes of crime officers are now gathering evidence from the pathway, which remains cordoned off.
It is unclear at this stage if the incident, which took place at around 16:15, was a targeted or random attack.
Hampshire Constabulary are understood to have made arrests and are questioning suspects at Newport Police Station tonight.
UPDATE MONDAY @ 10:27 – Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that a 19-year-old man from Cowes, a 20-year-old man from Newport and a 26-year-old man from Cowes have been arrested in connection with the incident.
All 3 remains in Police custody this morning.
Meanwhile the victim remains in St Mary’s Hospital, however his injuries are not life-threatening.
UPDATE TUESDAY – A fourth man, aged 48, has been arrested in connection with the incident.
All 4 men have now been bailed until 4th April pending further enquiries.
