UPDATED WITH VIDEO: The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are attending a road traffic collision on Shanklin Esplanade this evening (Tuesday) where it is understood persons are trapped inside a vehicle.
Crews from Ryde and Shanklin are in attendance outside The Aqua Hotel, alongside Police and ambulance crews.
UPDATE @ 19:55 – A Hyundai estate car, believed to be driven by an elderly male, has left the road and is hanging over the sea wall side-on.
Firefighters are working with paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service to free the casualty from inside the vehicle.
A rope line has been attached to the car and supports put in place to prevent it from tipping over the edge of the wall and onto the beach below, around a 1m drop.
Island Echo understands the vehicle was parked in a diagonal parking space on the seafront when, instead of selecting reverse, the driver selected 1st gear and drove towards a seating shelter, partially damaging the wooden frame before colliding with a beach hut and coming to rest on the edge of the wall.
UPDATE @ 20:30 – A 75-year-old male remains trapped inside his vehicle this evening.
Extrication equipment has been used by fire crews to remove a door and B-pillar.
According to witnesses, the family of holidaymakers had only got out the vehicle moments before the collision occurred.
UPDATE @ 20:55 – One male has now been freed from the wreckage of his car and conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital by land ambulance.
The 75-year-old tourist is not thought to have suffered any life-threatening injuries, however is believed to have suffered a suspected heart attack.
The vehicle remains secure as attention turns to the recovery of the vehicle from its precarious position.
The banana boat beach shack has been damaged in the collision and is said to be structurally unsafe having shifted with the impact.
UPDATE @ 21:50 – Bartletts Service Station have been requested by Police to remove the car from its current position.
Emergency services have now stood down from the incident.
