Parking charges on the Isle of Wight are set to increase for the 3rd time in just 3 years as the Council approves a 10p an hour hike. When the increase comes into force from April, parking for up to an hour on some Island streets could cost £2.45, or £4.90 for up to 2 hours. In a long-stay car park, parking for up to 2 hours could cost £3.80. The council has also agreed to increase the charges for some residential and tourist parking permits. The price of an All Island Permit — which allows people to park for 24 hours in most of the council’s long-stay car parks — will increase by 20%, from £648 a year to nearly £780. The authority has also agreed to introduce parking charges on Union Street, in Newport, which currently allows motorists to park for free for an hour. The Isle of Wight Council believes it could make another £431,867 a year from the increased prices, meaning the motorist is being used as a cash cow once again. The authority says it is required to generate additional income in 2024/25, and the parking costs would help meet general inflationary costs, cover the costs of enforcement and the maintenance of parking equipment. Without the increases, the council has warned it would need to make further reductions across its highways and transport activities. Isle of Wight councillors do have the right to ‘call-in’, or effectively challenge, the decision that was made, pausing their implementation, but must do so before tomorrow (1st February).

Refuse to use them and so should others using the public to get them out of debt
Charging people more to park so they can shop in a dying, ghost town. I’m sure there’s some sense in there somewhere; just give me a moment to find it.
That is their WEF bosses plan, Sausage knows this.
I have given supporting the Council, I do most of my shopping online, the only exception is popping in for a haircut or a visit to Hurst,I don’t want them to suffer.
The council are killing shops and restaurants on the island. They are a disgrace.
We are being run by a bunch of crooks who make Khan look like a
Genuine guy.
Khan does not even charge 24/7 parking charges 364 days of the year
Excellent news. I was pondering how I could spend all the extra cash I have
never ceases to amaze me that the council can convene one meeting and make a final decision within minutes and implement the decision in no time at all, with regards to increasing the charges to people, yet when it comes to actually doing things that benefit the taxpayers, then it is mired in delays, with meeting after meeting
Am I reading that they will remove the hours free parking from the Union street carpark? Why doesnt the council just post **** through business letterboxes
Can’t think that anyone will pay to park on Union Street. Seems petty, If they did it in Upper St James Street, Node Hill, I wouldn’t bother going to Newport at all.
Get an electric scooter. Simples. No parking to pay. And you get to annoy the boomers at the same time.
Most of us are to fat or old, some, like myself both. You can’t expect us to do anything other than sit down. Door to door, even having a car park is to far away, I need to be able to park by the main entrance.
Dirty bastards ..not me never go to carparks will go out of my way park on the road than pay these shits..
Spoke to a shop owner the other day and he said town is dead. Just another nail in the coffin for shops on the island.
Also heard another branded Newport based shop could be about to close due to drop in footfall.
Council doesn’t listen. Keep on taxing the motorist and they won’t come back just like the tourists.
Cost of living, they don’t know the meaning. Vote them out.
And they wonder why the high street is dying..
They are doing this on purpose to close small businesses down.
The New World Order is coming, get ready folks
Dont use them if at all poss people.rip off loos too.i cant hold mine but if you can….do!
It’s about time we all got together and started saying No. And demand why we have to pay so much for so little on the Isle of Wight.
Makes me laugh when they say the highways budget could be at risk of being reduced. Judging by the state of the islands roads I’d say the budget was no more than a £100 anyway
A £100 repair would cost the council £10,000 because Island Roads are charging them to do it. They can charge what they like because the council conspired in the formation of this ludicrous monopoly. Ironically, it was set up because bent councillors were awarding roadwork contracts to friends and family at inflated rates. You reap what you sow.
Just the next price hike…. Can’t see this coming to and end any time soon.
Just a clueless Council, no idea how to run the Island. Fire brigade tactics all the time. My late father worked in Local Government in Manchester and then he said the Isle of Wight Council was the laughing stock of Local Government. Nothing changed there then l.
Don’t shop local buy everything in supermarkets or online.Another nail in the coffin for small independent retailers. Also another 430k for councillors to boost their expenses or squander away.
Recently visited south Yorkshire. Barnsley high street was very busy , shops were full . Car parks including multi storey charges were 1st 3 hours free. Need I say more
This is just a part of what they are doing to counteract their £160M Overspending Deficit!!
What a nasty island this is becoming.
All you see thesedays is “Gestap o” Enforcement Officers slapping
tickets on motorists.
You can speed like Fcuk on the island, park in Loading bays and
on the pavement in Regent Street and the Council don’t give a Fcuk
THEY ARE MORE CONCERNED FINING MOTORISTS WHO PARK
ALONG ROADS A LITTLE LONGER THAN THEY SHOULD
I saw Enforcement Officers out and about in Ryde this morning
1 was along the Esplanade at 9.15am checking vehicles and 1 was
along Union Street at 9.33am
What a disgrace.
Friends of mine stayed at Whitby and Parking is FREE until 1st March
The Island is going to turn away Holidaymakers with their Draconian rules,
businesses are already suffering.
What are The Islands MP thoughts on targeting motorists
Nurses have to pay to park at the hospital- how much do councillors have to pay when they use County Hall?
They Pay Fcuk all, you should see their expense claims
that will make you laugh or CRY!
what blinker eyesight does this council have, surely it is better to reduce parking charges, thus allowing more people to use the car parks thus getting more money in for the council to squander
Greedy swine. How to kill our town centres in one easy lesson.
So the council put up car parking fees and then what . They’ve already lost this island thousands of pounds . They can’t seem to spend it in the right places. And then claim poverty and then hike up prices again. I think the whole council need revamping. Get rid of the current useless twats and put in people who really want to build this island up and make it proud again
I agree that the council seem not fit for purpose. The leaders seem to have very little forward thinking and too little intellectual nous. If I performed like this at work I’d be sacked. However councils all over the country seem to be deeply in debt.Maybe we should be using the buses more.
