“Her absence has left a huge void” – that’s the words of one parent following the sudden announcement that the headteacher of Arreton St George’s Primary School, Mrs Maria Herbert, has been replaced.
Parents were left in shock last week when it was unexpectedly announced that Mrs Herbert had been immediately extracted from her position.
A letter from the Chair of Governors, Eric Flemming, detailed the immediate appointment of a new Executive Head, Rebecca Day – the headteacher of Gatten & Lake Primary School.
Concerned parents say there has been no further communication or an explanation as to the reason behind Mrs Herbert’s sudden departure.
One parent has told Island Echo:
“There is a feeling of unrest at the school, with the children naturally worried. Mrs Herbert was always there in the morning to meet and greet each child, with words of encouragement for the day. Her absence has left a huge void and whilst the teachers are trying to maintain some normality, you can see that they look unsettled.”
“The children’s weekly newsletter didn’t come out on Friday, which the children look forward to, as it gives weekly praise to the children and awards that have been given in the week.
“The situation has been handled so badly, with the children left at the bottom of the priority list.”

It is said that the school’s newly appointed governors have also been left in the dark. One source says that Mrs Herbert had ‘no plans to leave after Christmas’ and ‘was planning ahead for this year’.
A public meeting is due to be held tomorrow (Thursday) to discuss the matter.
Eric Hemming, chair of governors, has said in a statement:
“After careful consideration Maria will be leaving the school. We know that this has been a difficult decision. She has always given all of herself for the benefit of the school’s children and the whole Arreton family.
“We will all miss her constant presence in the school, her kindness, commitment and support for everyone; and in expressing our immense gratitude for her service we wish her every success and contentment as she moves forward.”
