Nurses on the Isle of Wight will not be taking part in upcoming strike action – a move which has led to the Island’s MP praising local nurses for their hard work and dedication.
Elsewhere in the country, members of the Royal College of Nursing will strike in a row over pay. It will be the first time ever that nationwide strike action has been taken by RCN members across its 106-year history.
However, the threshold was not met here on the Island so it will be business as normal at St Mary’s.
Speaking ahead of the strike, Bob Seely MP has said:
“I am very grateful that nurses on the Isle of Wight chose to continue to care for patients instead of opting for strike action.
“Our nurses will be aware that the pay settlement did not come from Government, but from the recommendations of an independent pay review body set up to find a fair settlement. Nurses will benefit from a pay rise of at least £1,400 this year backdated to April 2022. This is on top of the 3% pay rise they received last year, despite a wider public sector pay pause. NHS funding has steadily increased and the UK Government is now spending over £150 billion.
“Nurses were one of the very few groups to receive a pay rise last year, thanks to their hard work and dedication during the Covid pandemic. It is important that they are paid fairly.
“Nursing is a vocation and I know our nurses on the Island are committed to looking after patients. We are all grateful for the wonderful work they do caring for our community.
“We now have significant new investment in the Island’s healthcare, the new building work at St Mary’s is due to start very soon and the diagnostic centre will improve healthcare as well as provide new facilities for nurses and other NHS staff to work in.”

Bob is deluded. The only reason they aren’t striking is because of the draconian government rules regarding strikes
but they’ll take the pay rise!
Well why the bloody hell shouldn’t they take a pay rise? The Tories have treated Public Sector workers so badly in the time they been in Government.
Nurses, Doctors, Police, Firemen (and woman) etc etc all so very badly let down by this government. The Tories will happily waste money on unfit PPE during the COVID pandemic, Boris giving the contract to a bum chum and then it wasn’t fit for purpose. Millions wasted. The people who are the backbone of this country get treated like crap.
It should not be like this.
not off the back of others who are prepared to fight for it first!!!
not prepared to strike, but happy to take the benefits gained by those that are!
I know right, these scrounges shouldn’t should have a pay cut. They get paid what they are worth!
Bob obviously does not know a lot about St Mary’s.
Nurses on the Island are not like Nurses on the mainlands busy
Hospitals.
They should, Bob is selling them down the river. He don’t get two sh**ts about them. Just wants to watch his bank account and eat sausages at illegal gatherings.
Sausage Chips And Beans on the menu at St Marys
Well done to our nurses having nothing to do with left wing unions
I take it you reject left wing policies such as sick pay, paid holiday and maternity/paternity leave then?
Have you been led down the rabbit hole by many media outlets, by any chance? Because your brainless comment suggests you’ve not done your research.
Nurses are not striking just on the basis of pay, but for safer staffing, safer working environments for staff – which all play a part in patient safety.
Nurses have upskilled dramatically over the years, but do not receive the pay that reflects those responsibilities. The RCN are suggesting strike action because nurses need to be taken seriously. They were praised up and down the country during covid, were putting their lives at risk, but apparently that’s not enough for a DECENT pay rise.
Bob Seely is a joke, nurses have not had a pay rise, they’ve had a pay cut in real terms!
It really gets my goat when people such as yourself assume that strike action is to cause trouble. Perhaps you ought to work within the health service and endure the workload, responsibility, extra hours, rude and ungrateful staff and patients a like and THEN have your moan. Our hospital may not be perfect, but I’d like you to find me one that is. Nurses work incredibly hard, have trained for years at degree level, most now at masters level – all to be told they’re only worth £1400 extra a year.
All other workers are allowed to strike; rail strikes, airport worker strikes, post office strikes, teacher strikes – the list could go on. Why are they allowed to strike to protest for fair pay, but nurses are not?
Totally agree with you , they deserve more pay ,they worked through pandemic how many of these people who offer negative comments did ?
Patients would still be looked after, but the hospital would be running on Bank Holiday routine. The emergency floor and ITU would be exempt because they provide emergency, life saving care.
But why should nurses continue being walked over. They deserve the recognition they’ve earned, not just through the pandemic, but showing up on a daily basis, knowing they face poorly staffed wards, being expected to care for a more patients than is considered safe.
If something is not done now, this will only get worse. 40,000 nurses left the NHS last year, we cannot recruit and retain because it’s an ever changing, ever losing battle. 7,000,000 patients on waiting lists nationally – only going to get worse as more nurses leave.
Far too many intelligent well informed comments for this bunch of morons im afraid. I learnt a long time ago you can’t educate pork.
For what they do
Tik Tok, read magazines, cigarette breaks etc etc
Of course they don’t want to take any time off.
Money for old rope
pathetic stupid troll
It is actually the truth, why why why don’t people like to hear the truth.
The Daily Mail told me! It must be true!
The radical lefties demanding sick pay, maternity pay, and holidays are destroying our great nation
And the council are getting between 4and 10 per cent , backdated to April!!!!!!
Our Nurses are worth more than the council workers ….
Did we clap for the council No would we definitely Not !!!!
As far as I’m aware benefits getting an inflation linked rise but nurses only getting a few percent, how is that justified???
It is looking like the incoming “Austerity v2” is going to cut most benefits.
Except the triple-locked pension. Can’t be peeing off their core voter base now, can they?
Old people deserve there it! It’s our money. We built this great world
Thanks, Bob. Just because “nursing is a vocation”, doesn’t mean that nurses don’t deserve fair pay for the long hours of emotionally-draining work that they do for the rest of us. Almost certainly, the reason that the voting threshold for strike was not met is because of the apathy induced by successive years of being ground down by thankless politicians. Never mind, give them a clap, have another sausage, and move on!
Not all Nurses do their job because it’s a vocation.
Many do it for job security, paid sick pay and a decent pension.
Well done Island nurses. Thank You
And your thanks is going to help the nurse who has just worked a 12 hour shift under extreme pressure with no breaks how, exactly?
If you really want to help, don’t vote Tory.
But the Tories made Britain great again!
nursing is voluntary – not a sentence – can always leave and get a better job.
Thank you nurses for holding the fort. You’re all stars…
Bob Seely was on £81,932.00 per year plus expenses, a very good final salary pension scheme & a 2.7% pay rise. Nurses were on a third of that salary, lost there cheaper final salary pension scheme & work beyond there hours got a 3% pay rise.
They have also lost a number of allowances plus they have upskilled dramatically over the years & have not received the pay that reflects those responsibilities.
I will add that this is not singled out to nursing as all of our support services deserve better as they are instrumental to the safety & well being of our country. But when they are being told that they are better off on benefits then some think has got to change & maybe that is our MP.
Bob Seely praises their decision not to take part in the strike.
It’s Bob’s bloody Conservative Party who he part of that have caused all this mess.
For 12 long years the Tories have been bringing this country to its knees. Wake up everybody, at the next General Election do not vote for these bloody Tories. They’ve got to go.
Revolution please
Well done nurses…..why be in the union….its OK for everyone to stand outside and fight for your locked pensions and pay rise….come on…..they will stand for what’s right….rip away and make public…..then what job will you have….
There are very few alternative suitable jobs on the Island giving that level of renumeration.
