A children’s nursery and other nearby properties were evacuated in Shanklin earlier this afternoon (Thursday) following the discovery of a piece of unexploded ordnance, which has since been detonated by Bomb Disposal experts.
Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team set up an exclusion zone on the revetment between Sandown and Shanklin following the discovery of the suspected ordnance near Littlestairs earlier on today.
The Royal Navy Bomb Disposal team arrived on scene shortly before 15:00 and worked swiftly to identify the object and establish a rig for a controlled explosion.
With the exclusion zone set and an impending explosion, parents of children at the YMCA Nursery at Winchester House were asked to collect their children.
The object – a shell – was moved out onto the beach and detonated shortly after 16:00.
