No action is being taken against a woman arrested in connection with the death of a German scooterist almost 2 years ago, it has been confirmed. It was on 25th August 2022, during the annual Isle of Wight Scooter Rally, that 51-year-old Mattias Klabis was killed as he travelled along Newport Road between Apse Heath and Lake. Mattias, from Hamburg, was involved in a collision with a Citroen C3 outside the entrance to the Willow Brook and Ninham Farm campsite. Sadly, his life could not be saved and he was pronounced dead at the scene – just 200 metres from the scooter rally campsite at Sandown Airport. Initially, Police arrested a then-36-year-old woman from Ventnor on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. She was subsequently released from custody pending further investigations. Now, almost 2 years on from that fatal day, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that no further action has been taken against the woman. Thousands of scooterists are expected to descend on the Island this week for the annual scooter rally, and undoubtedly their thoughts will be with Mattius and his family. An inquest into Mr Klabis’ death is due to be held on Thursday.

That poor women had had this playing on her mind for last 2 years, why does it take so long??
Totally agree, appalling that it’s taken two year’s when police could of made same decision within day’s after … there are a few more still that have been sitting for almost as long ,lorry in Newport,Van in Niton. Not good.
As you have never dealt with something like this you have no idea how complex the investigation is into a fatality is so dont criticise until you have.
It’s nothing like as complex as dealing with a crime (forensic evidence, mobile phone, unknown suspects etc) here you have both parties and witnesses, probably dash cam etc. Even insurance companies don’t take that long. By time the mainland investigation team has concluded and road open they will have 90% of info needed…. definitely doesn’t take two years..
I repeat, you have never dealt with something like this so have no knowledge of what happens after a fatal or serious so leave it to those that do and we wont come along and tell you how to do your job ok.
It’s not up to the police to decide. They present the evidence and the CPS makes the decision.
Had she insulted a religion or barked at a police dog she would have been in court and sentenced the next day… one rule for some.
I’m confused, no further action taken so what actually happened? Someone lost their life??
Are you assuming that the poor lady was to blame?
As far as I remember, the scooter driver was on the wrong side of the road….but I may be wrong.
Perhaps the man who died took with him the information needed to get to the bottom of what happened.
The police investigation will have resolved if that was the case based on positioning of vehicles at the scene, etc. Clearly, it has been concluded that there is no blame on the car driver and the most likely causes will be presented at the inquest. However, it has taken far too long to resolve.
Islandwide CCTV is needed going forward.
George Orwell wrote us warnings.
Not an instruction book, you fool.
What? On every lane and backwater on the island? What a dumb comment
The rider from Germany came out of the campsite riding on the wrong side of the road guess he forgot he was in the uk car came round the corner and hit him how is that her fault don’t know why this has taken so long to solve that poor woman
Nothing confusing about it, as there is no evidence that the lady was at fault CPS would have decided that NO Further Action is the correct decision.
An inquest is being held Thursday. That is when they say ‘what actually happened’ ♀️
That evidence would have been provided for the Coroner and this would have come from the Police who then pass it onto CPS for a decision so yes they would have known of the decision the Coroner will then conclude the findings.
With the benefit of hindsight it is interesting to look back at the comments on the original story.
It is an object lesson on why people should not jump to conclusions without the facts.
True.
‘isle of wighter’ – ‘she is an idiot’
‘Letting you know’ – ‘irisponsible (sic) so called drivers’
‘Letting you know’ (again) – ‘she is an island driver!!! That’s enough evidence for me’
‘Letting you know’ (again) – ‘every time one of you ignorant drivers go out on the road we are all at risk’
‘R.waterman.9Treefields .Ryde’ – ‘DAM IOW DRIVER .TAKING ANOTHER LIFE Should be locked up for LIFe’
‘Magical mag’ – ‘For God sake don’t let that woman drive again’
‘Lol’ – ‘Hope the stupid woman responsible gets her license removed’
‘Lol’ – ‘She deserves prison and removed from society…end of discussion’
Wouldn’t it be nice, and refreshing, if these people came back and apologised for what they said? Don’t hold your breath, though.
And yet they always do. I think it must be their closest approximation to relevance. So sad, and potentially dangerous. That’s social media…the gift that just keeps giving.
