The Isle of Wight Golf Union Junior Championships were held at Newport Golf Club on Sunday 8th September.
The course was presented in superb condition with perfect weather on the day.
In the morning all the players played 18 holes for the handicap competition and the opportunity to qualify for the 36 hole scratch event – and to be crowned Junior Champion. Harrison Knights (Westridge) shot gross 70, nett 64; Harvey Simpkins (of Shanklin and Sandown) secured 71, nett 64 and Nick Matthews (on home ground) carded four under par gross 64, with 6 birdies, 2 bogeys (one off the course record), nett 62 picking up the Newport Shield for the Overall Handicap and the McMasters Trophy for handicaps 0-14.
Harrison Lake (Westridge) won the Isle of Wight Golf Union Trophy for 15-24 handicaps with a score of 88, nett 73 and Austin Dyer won the Jack Mellor Trophy for handicaps 25-36, with a score of 112, nett 87.
Oliver Millroy, aged 7, playing in his first IOW Junior Competition, won the Wright Family Shield for players over 37 handicap with 14 points over 9 holes. Katie Lucas, carded 121, nett 90 for the girls’ event.
The top 6 players (scratch) from the morning qualified for the afternoon including Nick Matthews (64), Harrison Knights (70), Harvey Simpkins (71), Joseph Green (75), Max Shallice Palmer (83) and Joel Tarry (86).
The conditions remained perfect with good scores posted. Positions were to be gained and lost… Joseph Green (Shanklin and Sandown) made a charge with a gross 69 (one over).
Nick Matthews started the afternoon with 6 shots ahead which he extended with a one under par 67. He finished strongly with Eagle, Par, Birdie, and almost holing out with his second shot to the par 4, 18th, and having a tap in birdie, to the delight of the crowd gathered around the green. He finished with a total gross score of 131 (5 under par), winning the Bennett Scratch Trophy and crowed IOW Junior Golf Champion for the third year in succession.
Joseph Green, Harvey Simpkins and Harrison Knights all finished with 144, Joseph taking second place, Harvey third and Harrison forth by virtue of second round countback scores.
The players not qualifying for the afternoon scratch event played a 9 hole stableford, won by Harry Bradshaw (Freshwater) with 17 points.
